A dot matrix printer has a small print head that moves left and right across the page, one character at a time. A line matrix printer uses a full-width shuttle of hammers that prints an entire line at once, which is why it's measured in lines per minute (LPM) rather than characters per second. That makes it dramatically faster, far more durable and much cheaper per page for high-volume work — a Printronix P8000 prints 500 to 2,000 lines per minute, continuously, all day.

Line matrix printers are built for dusty, hot, humid factory and warehouse environments where a laser printer's toner and fuser would fail. And because it's an impact technology, it prints multi-part carbon-copy forms up to 6 parts in one pass — something a laser physically cannot do.
